Alis and Canyon's illicit affair was the focus and premise. When Webster introduced Ali's traumatic past, she gave us insight into his neglectful/abusive parents. Spoiler alerts from here on. The ridiculous, implausible Colin, Alis' sperm donor of a father, whose nefarious scheme to retrieve nearly his grown up son, Alis, all credibility. Well, it strained mine. Alis receives a series of cryptic texts he thinks are from his love interest and soon to be stepbrother. But the texts are revealed to have been sent by his birth father. This is where the plot thread begins to break. Colin shoots and kills a rival thug on the Alis' doorstep when said rival attempts stabbing Alis. Rival thug turns out to be a very incompetent gangster when we learn that a previous attemptsm was made on Ali's life and only failed because the incompetent thug hired a dumber thug to do the dirty work. All the while, Colin never warned Alis of the danger. He just sent inscrutable messages that Alis eventually determined were NOT from Canyon and terrified him. So helpful. After the attempt on Alis' life and shooting of this unknown criminal, the police are called. But, no one contacts them later when Colin CONFESSES to the shooting because they have no concrete "evidence". Huh. The two dad's and Alis heard it (after Alis lets Colin inside his home just because his terrifying birth father demanded it. That's when Colin confesses to killing the rival gang member. The dads STILL do nothing to implicate the man because: he's so dangerous. They got that figured out. So, the newly married dads take their blended family on a weird honeymoon/family vacay where Alis and Canyon's illicit affair is finally discovered. All hell breaks loose. The story is soap opera soup with a parent drug overdosing and rehabbing, (poor jilted mom), Alis attempted murder, drug running dad showing up, then Canyon's younger sister pregnancy is revealed just before Alis' runaway note is found. Yes, after Alis & Canyon are found together after a night of passion and daddies flip out, Alis is convinced he let his adopted dad down (who is actually his uncle) and that he doesn't deserve happiness. So unhappy, terrified and miserable Alis runs away from the vacay to join his drug/gun running dad in St. Louis. Why? Because he has no choice but to become baaad. It's not good in St. Louis. Nope. Alis finds himself among pawing perverts, whores and thieves. Sounds like a Cher song. He learns Colin lied to him. Surprise! Alis is trapped and is now REALLY sad, scared and miserable. But all is not lost (even though the Dads, Canyon nor his sister know where Alis went). But, Canyon doesn't give Alis up (he's in love with his now stepbrother) and sends Alis messages on social media. That bit was believable. Enough. Ah, but the next bit, the part where Alis prevents his criminal father's murder by said whore and teen-molesting gang member is not believable. And by this point, who cares? It's ridiculous nonsense. But the end is near and so is the HEA. Finally. It came. There was a great deal of that too. Coming. To the point I'm thinking, get on with the story. You can see that Webster's plot was convuluted, complicated and had waay too much thrown into the last chapters to be convincing. She must've been sitting there, tapping her chin wondering what ELSE can I put in to give a big finish? And that's too bad. This story needs a good editor to cut and shape it up. FIVE STARS for Canyon and Alister! This enemies to lovers, MM romance will have you smitten. The hate they felt quickly morphed into a love they couldn’t let go.Canyon is angry. When his father broke up their family to run off with his best friend, it tore them all apart. His father is now living his HEA, but Canyon is left picking up the pieces. He wants revenge. And no price is too great. He’ll walk away from the girl and football if it means he’ll get what he needs.Alister is the best friend’s son. They have known each other for years. He’s the perfect one. They guy who gets good grades, first on his track team and first chair in violin. The perfect way for Canyon to get back at his own father is to go after his father’s fiancé’s son.Canyon never expects his hate to be so easily transformed into an unstoppable attraction.
